Megatrends are major forces shaping our world. They can be observed in reality, measured and thus backed by verifiable data. By definition, they are big and include some of society´s biggest challenges, risks and opportunities. Three such megatrends affect each other in the cities of our world (i) population growth/urbanization (ii) digital change (iii) climate change.

The three mega trends are connected and inter-wined, which also suggests “synergetic” opportunities. Where are patterns of opportunities and where are patterns of unresolved problems?

The Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN) – Networking Session

Date: Tuesday, 9 June, 19:00 - 20:30

Room: S34/35

This session introduced the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN) and presented initial findings from Second Assessment Report on Climate Change and Cities (ARC 3-2) concerning interrelationships between adaptation and mitigation in cities. Synergies, conflicts and trade-offs between adaptation and mitigation were analyzed and discussed across scales. The session illustrated the need and importance of building a robust climate knowledge base in cities to support them in developing climate change actions strategies to address both climate adaptation and mitigation in an integrated manner.

Expert Group Meeting on Guidelines for City Climate Action Plans (Closed session)

Date: Thursday 11 June, 09:00 - 17:30 and Friday 12 June, 09:00 - 13:00

UN-Habitat is leading a multi-stakeholder effort to develop Guidelines for City Climate Action Plans. The meeting in Bonn was part of a year-long process that kicked off with an expert group meeting in Oslo (March 2015). During the meeting it was expected that partners charted the way forward to a launch of a 'Version 1.0' of the Guidelines at COP21 in Paris (December 2015).
